If you found yourself slightly bored by the gunplay of Half-Life 2 but loved the way the game challenges your brain, then it’s definitely worth giving Research And Development a go. Given a gravity gun, you’re confronted with a series of elaborate puzzles, similar to the classic point-and-click adventure style so popular throughout the 1990s, but injected with the modern-day game physics and logic puzzles, making a type of environmental adventure. This mod offers players who love the puzzle aspect of Valve’s Half-Life 2 the opportunity to almost cut out entirely the first-person shooter aspect. This is well-polished and has an amazing storyline that is narrative-driven, really making you feel part of the action. The Gate 2 also features voice acting and a full musical score, giving you the feel of an authentic stand-alone game not an experience you get a lot with many mods. However, the similarities do end here due to the massive amounts of new assets including enemies. The Gate was a hugely successful mod for Half-Life, and The Gate 2 follows the previous storyline across different planets, much like the original Half-Life.
